Zombie Panic: Source Released!

At long wait, Zombie Panic: Source for Half-Life 2 has been released! For those who have been playing Zombie Panic for Half-Life 1, must be very eager to play the Source version. But of course, it is always possible you never heard of Zombie Panic before. Thus, a small explanation of the modification: The basic idea of the Zombie Panic is to create solid game play that is based on a classic zombie outbreak scenario, the living dead are coming for the last remaining humans, and these survivors must fight them off and live through the day. Everyone joins a server, in the beginning you can either choose to join the human team or you can volunteer to be the first zombie. If no one volunteers the game will pick one human randomly and the game begins.

The starter zombie's goal is to, of course kill the humans while the human goal is to stay alive as long as possible, complete objectives, or even wipe out all the zombies. The catch is that when a human is slayed he will simply join the ranks of the undead, now ready to finish off his old living teammates. The humans can't tell by the player list who's alive and who's not, eventually there will only be one survivor still standing if all goes wrong, facing all the zombies which use to be allies, with his back to a wall. The zombies only have a certain number of reinforcements (lives), when a zombie is killed they lose 1 life from the counter. However, when a human is killed they gain 1 life. If the zombies only have 1 respawn left the humans can win the round by killing off the remaining undead left on the map.

Alarmingly, These Are Not Lovesick Zombies

Here is a very bizarre zombie flash game I found... It doesn't really seem to have anything to do with zombies...

Alarmingly, These Are Not Lovesick Zombies

Dead Island: Real time zombie degeneration

This video is for the upcoming Dead Island for the Xbox 360 and PC. It shows the face of a normal person degenerating into a zombie in real time. It is not for those with weak stomaches.

Here's a quick overview of Dead Island if you haven't heard of it:

Dead Island is an upcoming videogame being developed and published by Techland for the Xbox 360 and PC. It is an open-ended game centered on survival and trying to find the protagonist's wife on a zombie-infested island.[1] The game uses a first-person perspective; however, the developers are claiming that the game should not be labeled a first-person shooter due to a bigger emphasis on melee combat and ammunition conservation, rather than a shoot 'em up.[1] The game is expected to be released in 2008.

Dark Sector Preview Video

Here's a preview video for the upcoming Dark Sector for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Dark Sector Webisode 3 (WM/HD)

For those unfamiliar with Dark Sector, here is a quick overview of the main character:
The game's main character is a man named Hayden Tenno, a morally ambivalent clean-up man employed by the CIA. He suffers from a real-life disease called congenital analgia that does not allow him to feel pain. On a mission in a fictional former eastern bloc nation, he is exposed to a biological compound which mutates him, dramatically changing his right arm, and giving him the ability to spontaneously grow a three-bladed throwable weapon called a glaive. As explained in Game Informer Magazine, the glaive is a part of his body, can be used to generate light, and can be controlled remotely by the player.

Teenage Zombies: Interview

Spong.com has an interview with Darren McGrath up. Darren is the VP of Creative Development for InLight, the company that created Teenage Zombies: Invasion of the Alien Brain Thingys!.

It is a Nintendo DS game, where you play as three zombies saving Earth from an alien invasion.
SPOnG: What about the retro sci-fi feel? Any films/TV/books in particular that influenced that?

Darren McGrath: Generally speaking our “lo-fi, sci-fi” feel was born in the spirit of those old B-movies like Night of the Living Dead, Evil Dead and The Thing from Another World. Combining the comic book aspect to the story itself was adopted because it was also part of the culture of those times and really helped to support the property that we were trying to establish.

Peggle: Zombie Edition?

Pop Cap is apparently developing an as-yet-unannounced zombie related game. Here's the quote from the latest issue of PC Gamer magazine (US).
We snagged evidence of an as-yet-unnamed survival-horror game that puts gamers against everybody’s favourite moaning, groaning unpleasant smelling adversary: the undead. That’s right - survival horror from the same folks that game us a strapping unicorn named Bjorn in peggle.

Dead Space Screenshots

Voodoo Extreme has a bunch of new Dead Space screenshots up. There isn't anything too revealing, but it looks like these won't be traditional zombies. They seem to be some sort of zombie-mutants.

Overall the graphics look really good. From what I see only one type of enemy appears in these screenshots. Hopefully there is a decent amount of variation in the game.

Resident Evil: Weapons Trailer

I saw GameTrailers has quite a few new videos on Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles for the Nintendo Wii.

The weapons trailer in particular looks pretty sweet.

The full listing for all of their Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles video is available here: http://www.gametrailers.com/game/3393.html

Clive Barker's Jericho

I just beat Clive Barker's Jericho this weekend. The game is set in the near future, and you control an elite squad of psychic military operatives trying to prevent Hell from overtaking Earth.

Okay, it does sound a bit corny and cliche, but the game was worth playing. You can cycle through each of up to six characters in your squad, each of whom have unique abilities and weapons. The abilities are used throughout the game to solve puzzles or kill the legions of zombies and demons during your descent into "The Abyss".

The setting, graphics, and sound are all excellent, and create a frightening setting with rivers of blood and limbs and more.

The most frustrating aspect of the game is the allied AI. When you are not directly controlling members of your squad, they seem incapable of using their own abilities, and rarely even shoot at enemies. Fortunately you are capable of instantly bring them back to life. However, this requires you to be within melee range, leading to fights where the entire time is spent running between your incompetent team mates while chain resurrecting them.

Most of the puzzles in the game are frustrating with obscure solutions. The highlights of the game are the story, squad system, and just mowing down the almost endless hordes of zombies and undead with your team.

I wouldn't recommend buying the game unless you are a hardcore fan of zombie games or it is in a discount bin, but if you don't have anything else to play it is definitely worth renting.

Here is Yahtzee's review from Zero Punctuation. He didn't think as highly of it as I do. :)

Preview: Dead Space

GameSpot has a Dead Space Preview up.

If you're not sure what Dead Space is, here is an excerpt from the GameRevolver Dead Space Review:
You are Isaac Clarke, a space engineer who specializes in fixing giant mining ships for the Concordance Extraction Corporation, or C.E.C. As most stories of the like go, your company receives a distress call from the USG Ishimura, a “Planet Cracker” class ship that takes dead planets, and destroys them to extract valuable ore for the company. In the assumption that the ship has had a mechanical failure, Isaac gathers coworkers Lt. Zach Hammond, security officer, and Kendra Daniels, local Tech specialist. As you set out to meet with the ship upon the cruiser class Kellion, you soon realize that this is no ordinary distress call. In the classic sci-fi manner, you soon find that the ship has been over ran by a mysterious alien race. After boarding the ship, you are separated from your party and this routine check, becomes a race for your life.

Left 4 Dead

Left 4 Dead looks like it is going to be pretty sweet.
Left 4 Dead is an upcoming multiplayer co-operative survival horror game by Turtle Rock Studios and Valve Corporation (a collaboration that has previously produced Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, as well as maps and the official bot for Valve's Counter-Strike: Source). The expected release date for Left 4 Dead is early 2008.[1] The game has been built using Valve's Source engine.

The game was first revealed in the Christmas 2006 publication of PC Gamer UK with a six-page article describing a playthrough at Valve's headquarters.

The game was first playable at the Showdown 2007 LAN in San Jose, it was also playable from August 2-5 at QuakeCon 2007. A Valve booth allowed a team of 4 survivors to play against AI controlled bots as well as 2 guest developers from Turtle Rock Studios. However, the general public was only allowed to play as the four survivors.

Further Zombie Game Site Improvements and Updates

Loktar has been hard at work adding even more features to Zombie Games.

He's currently working on adding further improvements to user profiles, individual descriptions for zombie games, an official and user rating and review system for each flash game, and much much more.

He's been slaving away on the site even while quarantined by the the United States Air Force. Clearly, there is no limit to his dedication. I salute Loktar, and all veteran's of zombie flash game web site design and development (except for those involved in competing sites).

Zombies in other games...

I've been thinking about starting to write articles for Undead Games. The catch is, they wouldn't wouldn't be typical content that is currently on the site. My entertainment interests are varied, but there are often undead or zombie themes you can find if you look. ;p

Some of my ideas for articles include:
  • The Forsaken in World of Warcraft (I've played an undead priest and warlock for 3 years)
  • Magic the Gathering, the only deck I enjoyed was black and 100% zombies
  • Anime series I've watched with zombies or undead (Hellsing, Blood+, etc.)
  • Halo series (One of my favorite game stories, which the Flood are clearly inspired by zombies)
  • Bioshock (There are many zombie-like elements; body mutilation, mind control, mindlessness, etc.)
I'm sure I can find many other topics to rant about related to zombies in games once I get the inclination.
