EA and Image Comics Announce Dead Space Comic Series With Ben Templesmith and Antony Johnston

Limited Edition First Issue Only Available at WonderCon in San
Francisco
REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(Business Wire)--
Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS) and Image Comics today
announced a new comic book series based upon the upcoming original
survival horror video game; Dead Space(TM). This new six book series
set in the Dead Space universe will be written and illustrated by Ben
Templesmith and written by Antony Johnston.

The Dead Space comic is the prequel story for the game. This
series tells the gut-wrenching tale of a deep space mining colony that
unexpectedly pulls an ancient and vicious alien life force from the
dark rock.

The first issue will be on comic store shelves starting March 3rd
for the regular price of $2.99 each. However, a limited edition
version of issue #1 with exclusive cover art will be available at
WonderCon. In addition, Ben Templesmith and Antony Johnston will be
signing the first issue of the Dead Space comic at WonderCon on
February 22nd & 23rd at the Electronic Arts/Image Comics booth where
the first 25 people each day will receive a free copy.

"The world of Dead Space has such a deep storyline that it's
easily adaptable to other mediums," said Executive Producer of Dead
Space, Glen Schofield. "We love the fact our story is being told
across multiple forms of media, providing different experiences to
different audiences, which all lead to the same dark place."

Ben Templesmith is an Australian commercial artist best known for
his work in the American comic book industry -- most notably Fell with
writer Warren Ellis, published by Image Comics, and 30 Days of Night
with writer Steve Niles published by IDW Publishing. The 30 Days of
Night novel provoked a bidding war between film studios for the movie
rights when the story was pitched a second time with Templesmith's
artwork. Ben has been nominated for multiple Eisner Awards three years
in a row for his comic work. He has also created book covers, movie
posters, trading cards, and concept work for film.

Antony Johnston was born and raised in the Birmingham, England
area and is the author of thirteen graphic novels, including
Stormbreaker and Point Blanc (adapted from Anthony Horowitz'
best-selling Alex Rider novels), The Long Haul, Julius and Three Days
in Europe. He writes two ongoing serials, the sci-fi epic Wasteland
and the children's fantasy Texas Strangers. He has adapted many of
Alan Moore's prose stories to comics, written for the Texas Chainsaw
Massacre comics license, and is the only other writer to have penned a
story for Greg Rucka's award-winning Queen & Country series. He also
writes novels; his debut Frightening Curves won the 2002 American
Independent Publishing Award for Best Horror. His second novel,
Stealing Life, was published in 2007.

Under development at EA Redwood Shores, Dead Space ships Fall 2008
for the PLAYSTATION(R)3 computer entertainment system, the Xbox
360(TM) videogame and entertainment system and the PC. This product is
not yet rated by PEGI or ESRB. More information about Dead Space is
available at www.deadspacegame.com.

Animated Dead Space Movie

Apparently there is a Dead Space movie coming out produced by the same studio that makes the Simpsons.

EA and Starz Media Join to Produce Animated Dead Space Movie

Feature Based on Highly Anticipated Video Game Is First Project Between Starz Media and Electronic Arts

BURBANK, Calif. & REDWOOD CITY, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS) and Starz Media announced today the development of an animated movie prequel to the highly anticipated sci-fi survival horror game Dead Space™. The companies also have animation projects in development for two other EA franchises. The relationship kicks off with this Dead Space prelude that will deliver new details on the horrifying tale the game will unleash this Halloween.

The script for the Dead Space animated feature picks up the plot where the original comic book series ends and leads up to the beginning of the Dead Space game. The story focuses on the events aboard a futuristic mining spaceship, the USG Ishimura, after it pulls a mysterious artifact from a remote dig site. The artifact triggers the sudden invasion of a long-dormant alien presence, and the Ishimura's crewmembers find themselves locked in a frantic struggle to survive. The animated feature is slated to premiere at the same time as the game is launched.

This project signals both companies' belief that mass-appeal games provide opportunities for new and exciting programming in a variety of different media. This announcement comes at a time when the video game industry is valued at more than $30 billion worldwide for packaged goods, wireless and online games in calendar year 2007 and game-inspired entertainment is pervasive in movie theaters, on TV and across online media.

Starz Media is currently in discussions with broadcasters worldwide that have already expressed interest in airing Dead Space, which is scheduled to be released via broadcast TV and then on DVD. The company will launch international sales of the animated feature at the upcoming MIP-TV market in Cannes, France. Starz Media will also market the movie through its home entertainment company Anchor Bay Entertainment, as well as via online and wireless distributors.

The deal with Starz Media and its animation unit Film Roman reflects EA's growing commitment to developing filmed entertainment projects based on the company's games. For Film Roman, the venerable animation company behind "The Simpsons," "King of the Hill" and the pre-school hit "Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!," the booming video game business is fertile territory for developing new hit movies and series.

"Due to the richness and complexity of stories that have evolved for video games, they have become a type of entertainment that can span generations and provide fantastic inspiration for other forms of media; especially in the realm of animated features," Film Roman President and COO Scott Greenberg said. "We're particularly thrilled to be starting off with Dead Space."

"We are really excited to be working with Film Roman to create an animated feature that will tell the portion of the Dead Space saga between the comic and game," said Glen Schofield, Executive Producer for Dead Space. "With the video game, comic book and now animated movie, Dead Space has become a true multimedia brand. Each of these elements delivers the story to new audiences and tells it from different aspects and perspectives."

Film Roman is producing "Dead Space" in alliance with Digital Tetra Inc., in Korea. The Gotham Group of Los Angeles, a leading animation representation company, helped put the production arrangement together.

Under development at EA Redwood Shores, Dead Space is not yet rated by PEGI or ESRB. For more information about the game, go to the Dead Space website.

English of the Dead

Sega is releasing a new zombie game for the Nintendo DS in the "House of the Dead" series called "English of the Dead". The concept is similar to "Typing of the Dead", but instead of killing zombies by typing; you have to translate Japanese words and phrases to English. Sega currently has no plans to release an American version of this game.

Stubbs The Zombie Sequel

Xbox Evolved has an interview with Matt Soel, the lead writer for Stubbs the Zombie, about his upcoming game, Hail to the Chimp.

In it he reveals there is a sequel for Stubbs the Zombie in development. Unfortunately he doesn't give any additional details.

XE: Just one last question: Stubbs the Zombie was a great start for you guys, I personally loved it; when can we expect to see Stubbs 2?

Matt: I'm glad to hear that. Stubbs is near and dear to all of us, and we've heard from lots of people who would like to see more of him. I can't say anything specific right now, but it's safe to say he'll be back. They say you can't keep a good man down, and that goes double for the ones with an insatiable hunger for brains.

Dead Space Preview

Action Trip has a preview up for Dead Space:
The game takes us some 400-500 years into the future. Humans are forced to scout for resources away from their homeplanet. Consequently, resources are being collected from other planets throughout the galaxy - this operation is called planet cracking. Miners are frequently sent out to establish colonies on dead planets. The mining procedure is simple: the planet is divided into colossal chunks, which are then smelted and processed until they are completely drained of all their resource potential; precious minerals and such. The process is, evidently, very complex and it usually takes several years to complete. The main character heads out into space to locate and investigate a mining ship, named Ishimura. The ship lost contact with Earth, but given the extensive period needed for mining, the loss of communication isn't considered a rare occurrence. Under such circumstances a second, smaller, mining crew is sent to the location to help restore communications and get the process going. As part of a routine maintenance inspection, another crew arrives, consisting of an engineer, scientist, security officers and a small number of additional personnel. Isaac Clarke (an obvious tribute to sci-fi authors Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke), the fully armored engineer from the screenshots, is doing his best to discover what went wrong on Ishimura. Pretty soon an unknown alien species attacks your team and starts turning them into hostile mindless abominations. Isaac must now fight to stay alive on the ship.

Dead Island Preview

Dead Island is a free-roaming game, so it's up to you how you proceed and where you go, whether it's straight into the nearby hotel complex to check in and headshot a half-naked zombie sunbather or trek into the tropical forest for a nice bit of sightseeing and undead immolation.

"There'll be a lot of different environment settings, interiors and outdoors with challenging landscapes," says product manager Marcin Pióro. "We've designed a huge, realistic-looking tropical island with roads, infrastructure, marinas, pool bars and a dynamically changing ecosystem that reacts to the spreading of a zombie epidemic. You have the option to backtrack to previous locations to complete tasks that you didn't complete, or plough on ahead."

Dead Island will feature a whole army of undead nasties, from the lurching, moaning classic species from George Romero's movies, to the fast-moving monstrosities like those in the 2004 remake of Romero's Dawn of the Dead, all controlled by a planned AI system (or rather an 'Advanced Artificial Life System' as developer Techland would have it) that will create spontaneous individual and group behaviour.

Left 4 Dead Playtest Preview

CVG has a play-test preview up for Valve's highly anticipated co-op zombie killer, Left 4 Dead. In summary; the game is extremely true to the zombie movies that inspire it. The game play blends waves of adrenaline spiked cooperative combat, with periods of quiet, tense paranoia.

The preview is excellent, and gives a real feel for what we have to look forward to.
PC Preview: Left 4 Dead

Have I introduced you to The Director? You've possibly heard about him; he's the playful AI mastermind that'll be toying with your adrenaline levels. Given that zombie hordes don't have much intelligence to draw on - uncuddly noggin chompers that they are - the cleverness lies in their deployment, which is governed by The Director.

No area is safe, and no area is a guaranteed carnage bomb, so you can never be sure around which corner, or from which patch of forest the hordes will come. Instead of scripted moments, the game decides what to do based on preceding events, so you'll end up forced to trust your sense of dramatic timing, rather than map memory.

If you've just had a prolonged onslaught of hell's overspill, then The Director will loosen the thumbscrews, and give you some dramatic respite.

Left 4 Dead Release Date: Delayed

There are unofficial claims that the upcoming zombie shooter game Left 4 Dead has been delayed until late summer 2008. This is no doubt related to Valve's recent acquisition of Turtle Rock. I'm sure it is for the best and will mean that we will have a more well tested and polished game once it is released.

Previously scheduled to arrive during Q1 2008, the forthcoming co-op zombie shooter Left 4 Dead (PC, X360) will now hit in the late summer...

New Left 4 Dead Trailer

GameTrailers.com has a new trailer up for the highly anticipated multiplayer zombie game, Left 4 Dead.

The hi-def version of the trailer is available here.

Unfortunately, it is just a teaser, extremely short, and doesn't show any real game play. It shows a brief clip of survivors being attacked by a horde of zombies.

Left 4 Dead Video Preview

Gamer.tv has a video preview up for Left 4 Dead.

The reviewer's voice is incredibly annoying, but it is worth watching. There is a good example of the interface for the Survivors. It shows how you can quickly give commands to teammates.

They also reference a system called "the director" which dynamically adjusts zombie spawn points throughout the game. So, if you replay the same level, the zombie encounters could be completely different. Zombies will have the ability to see in the dark, Survivors will not. They mention four weapon groups, five zombie classes, and a player reward system.

There isn't a lot of new information, but it is always cool to see the game in action. I can't wait to try this out.

Valve acquires Left 4 Dead developer

Valve announced today that they have fully acquired Turtle Rock Studios, the studio developing Left 4 Dead.

Here is the full press release:
Fresh off the success of The Orange Box, the 2007 game of the year award-winning collection of new games heralded as "the best value in gaming history," Valve Corporation announces the acquisition of Turtle Rock Studios, the Orange County-based development house behind one of 2008's most anticipated games, Left 4 Dead.

Valve was founded in 1996 and has grown to become one of the game industry's leading technology and content creators, with a portfolio of over 20 million games sold worldwide. The merger of the two companies extends Valve's development team and provides the company with a new studio in southern California.

Turtle Rock Studios' Left 4 Dead joins a growing list of Valve's game properties which includes the Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Team Fortress and Day of Defeat series of games as well as Portal, introduced as part of The Orange Box.

"We have been seeing very strong growth with Steam and Source, our content distribution and development platforms, up over 150% over the last 12 months. Given our expectations for Left 4 Dead and our long-standing relationships with members of the Turtle Rock team, this was an easy decision. It also gives us a base from which to expand our development activities in the Los Angeles area," said Gabe Newell, president of Valve.

"Left 4 Dead fills a long-standing demand gamers have had for a co-op first-person action experience, and it will also help Valve's expansion into the console market," added Doug Lombardi, Valve's VP of marketing.

"Valve has had great success bringing in projects and teams such as Team Fortress and Portal. As I spent time working and talking with the creators of those products over the past several years, it became clear that this was the right next step for myself, my colleagues at Turtle Rock, our customers, and our products," said Michael Booth, founder and CEO of Turtle Rock Studios. "We are excited to be a part of such a visionary and forward-thinking company."

Founded in 2002 by Michael Booth, Turtle Rock Studios is the creator of Left 4 Dead, named one 2008's most wanted titles by many of today's leading game-enthusiast publications and Web sites.
